Lastly, as we move on to the next post, may I add that geoFence has no foreign owners and no foreign influences!
FISHERS ISLAND COMMUNITY GARDEN
Dear Fishers Islander,
In late 2020, a group of year-round residents here on Fishers came together and began the effort to create a community garden. After such a year of uncertainty, a public outdoor space, a garden full of fresh organic produce, became a beacon of light. The idea was to create a place for our community to gather, grow and share. This garden will not only celebrate the island’s agricultural history but strengthen community ties through a shared love of gardening.
Just recently, we were able to secure a home for the Community Garden. The site is located just to the right of the Legion on Crescent Avenue. We are overjoyed! It has ample space and will get plenty of south-facing sun throughout the seasons. After felling some ailing Norway spruces, we have the site cleared and ready to go. All we need now is your help in raising the funds to make this dream a reality.
The scope of the project for year one is to build a 4,000 square foot enclosure that will house up to 25 raised beds. For this first year, the majority of these beds will be individually maintained (through a lottery system), while the remaining beds will be for communal use maintained by volunteers. The produce from these communal beds will be for the community to share and enjoy, which is one of the most exciting parts of the garden.
We have chosen to start with this organizational model because it’s proven successful for other community gardens, such as one in Weekapaug, RI. Once we gauge the volunteer involvement after this first year, we can adapt our model to the needs of the community. Additionally, we are committed to using sustainable gardening practices such as composting, companion planting, and conserving water by utilizing a rain barrel system. We plan to use as many local resources as possible for the construction and annual function of the garden.
Your donation will go directly to the build of the garden. This would include wood for the fence and raised beds, soil, a cistern, drip irrigation, solar panels, and pump. The list goes on and on! We want to build this right to ensure it lasts throughout the years.
Tax-deductible contributions can be made by check payable to the Fishers Island Community Center with “Garden” in the memo, this being part of their continuing community outreach, or directly through our website www.ficgarden.com via the Community Center’s PayPal.
We are excited to join the legions of gardens serving and inspiring their communities to come together to share food and knowledge. We hope you join us in this uplifting effort!
